THE CONCEPT OF FAMILY

If we take the concept of the society, then a family is a group of people who are related to each other who are recognized by birth that is called consanguinity, by marriage or other relationships which are called affinity, or co-residence as implied by the etymology of the English word – the family. Or it can be a combination of these words that may include spouses, parents, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters, members of an extended family may include grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews, nieces and siblings in-laws. Often these are also called the members of the immediate family, depending on the relationship of an individual with the family.

Often in the societies, the family is called as the principal institution for the socialization of the children. As the basics of raising children, loving them and caring for them generally classify most families. A nuclear family consists of a husband, his wife, and their children. An avuncular family consists of grandparents, a brother, his sister, and her children. The extended family means parents and children reside with other members of one’s parent’s family. Sexual relations among the members get regulated by rules concerning incest such as incest taboo.

The word – family, can be used metaphorically to create more inclusions such as community, nation, global village, or humanism. The science of genealogy is used to trace family lineages through family history. The family is also a critical economic unit studied by family economics.

One of the main functions of the family is providing a framework for producing and reproducing biological offsprings to grow the generations ahead. It can get done by sharing food, giving and receiving of love and care, share all rights and duties, and moral and sentimental emotions. Hence one’s experience of family shifts over time. From a child’s perspective, a family is a family of orientation the family helps in locating children socially and plays a significant role for them to socialize. As per the view of the parent, the family is a bonding which allows them to get connected and socialize as a combined unit and protect and be the head of the family as a unit. However, only the production of children is not the primary aim of the family. In societies with the sexual division of labor, the marriage and the resulting relationship between the two people, it is necessary to form an economically productive household.

It. is noted that the concept of family confused with the household, as in different contexts in which the word is used. This confusion is not at all accidental, but inductive of the word – family, ideology of capitalist, some countries that pass social legislation that insists the members of a nuclear family should live together, irrespective of the ideological and legal pressures, a large number of families do not conform to the ideology of nuclear family, though claiming to be a nuclear family.

The family and kinship are to be universally considered with relations of blood; many other societies have identified a family as being able to live together under one roof. Sharing of accommodation, sharing of food, sharing of love, and care within the small group of people was considered as a family though some societies opposed the ideas of living together bonded with some social obligations without the consent of the community.

Times have changed, its more acceptable and encouraged for mothers to work and fathers to spend more time at home, tending up the children. The way roles get balanced between the parents will help the children grow and learn valuable lessons of life. The importance of communications and equality holds excellent values in the family to avoid the role of strain.
